Fixed wing aircraft are characterised by a comparatively simpler structure and more efficient aerodynamics that provide the advantage of longer flight durations at higher speeds. UAVs like the E384 are capable of a maximum flying time of 100 minutes with a cruising speed of 13m/s.  This makes fixed wing UAVs ideal for applications like aerial survey which requires the capture of geo-referenced imagery over large areas. To land the fixed wing UAV like the E384 it is recommended that you have a landing space of 100m x 20m.

Rotary wing UAVs involve greater mechanical complexity which translate generally into lower speeds and shorter flight ranges.  A quadcopter like the Inspire 1 by DJI has a maximum flying time of around 15-20 minutes with a top speed of around 22m/s. Their advantages, however, are their ability for Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) and their capacity to hover and perform agile maneuvering.  This makes rotary wing UAVs well suited to applications like facility inspections and surveillance.  Rotary wings also facilitate greater flexibility with the payloads that they can deploy.
